The Difference Between Fear and Intuition

clarity coaching decision-making emotional awareness intuition Jul 11, 2025

You feel the pull to make a change.

But something inside keeps stopping you.

Is it fear?
Is it intuition?
Is it a sign that this isn’t the right path, or just a moment of growth?

When you’ve been burned before, or raised to prioritize other people’s expectations, it can be incredibly hard to tell the difference.

Here’s how I explain it to coaching clients:

Fear makes everything feel tight, high-stakes, and urgent.
It’s loud, anxious, and focused on outcomes.

Intuition, on the other hand, is quiet.
It often shows up as a steady knowing.
You might still feel nervous, but beneath the fear there’s something calm.
A quiet yes. A soft pull. A sense of groundedness.

A quick check-in to help you tell them apart:

🌿 Does this feeling come from urgency or resonance?

Fear says, “If I don’t act now, I’ll miss my chance.”
Intuition says, “This feels right, even if I don’t have all the details yet.”

🌿 Does this thought calm your body or activate it?

Fear puts your nervous system on high alert.
Intuition often feels like a softening, even when it’s nudging you into new territory.

🌿 Are you trying to convince yourself or listen to yourself?

Fear spins in pros, cons, and worst-case scenarios.
Intuition speaks once or twice, clearly and without panic.
You may still feel scared, but the message lands in your body differently.

You don’t have to get rid of fear in order to hear your intuition.

You just need to practice listening beneath the noise.

That’s what we work on together in coaching.
Not to find “the answer,” but to rebuild trust in your own knowing.
